In one room, these inmates are then also chained to the wall. Inmates who are judged to be dangerous, who are on disciplinary status or who are on suicide watch are shackled with ankle chains and handcuffed. Seeing an inmate always depends on first winning the competition to find a room. The number of rooms where we can visit with prisoners privately is limited, and the rooms are used by others in the jail besides counselors. Everything here is geared toward minimizing the risk of suicide.įour of us share a counseling office. Their shoes close with Velcro because shoestrings can be used to strangle oneself. The inmates wear smocks and pants with broad orange and white stripes. The first time I caught sight of a prisoner, it startled me so badly that I wondered whether I truly wanted to work here. I wait to hear a buzz signaling that the door has been unlocked before proceeding through. The lock for each door is controlled from a remote central office. People fall for this scam as they think they are doing a good deed.To enter my office, I first pass through a series of three heavy steel doors. He will say that the number is impossible to reach from the prison he is in, or that they are not allowed to call cell phones. The prisoner will ask the victim to call a number where supposedly his daughter is, to make sure she is okay. As soon as the victims answer, the scammer comes in with a quick apology for disturbing them followed by an emotional short story, such as being thrown in jail because he beat up a guy who assaulted his daughter, an hour ago. How does this scam work? Whenever allowed to make phone calls, real inmates dial random numbers until they find somebody willing to help.
